A bag you could personalize, a rock you could decorate, a little box you could turn into a gift… POSCA paint markers have a way of making you look at everyday objects differently. You start by imagining one small design, and before long, you have a whole list of things you want to make.
If you enjoy coloring, you may have already read my guide to markers for adult coloring books. But with POSCA markers, I wanted to take that love of color beyond the pages of a book.
I used them to make a cardboard mobile for a friend’s daughter, with hanging shapes inspired by Johanna Basford’s Lost Ocean. I cut out the shapes, colored them with my POSCA markers, and then suspended them to create the mobile.

What I loved was taking artwork I enjoyed and turning it into a personal gift. A few pieces of cardboard, carefully chosen colors, and the pleasure of making something for someone else.
That’s what I enjoy about POSCA paint markers: coloring can become something you give, hang up, or keep nearby. And you might already have something at home that’s waiting for a little color.
Why I Fell in Love with POSCA Paint Markers
At first, I wasn’t sure they were for me. I associated POSCA markers with graffiti artists and professional illustrators. I admired what other people made, but I didn’t immediately picture myself doing the same.
Then I tried them, and I understood the appeal: the pleasure of painting with the familiar feel of a marker.
For my mobile, I could color the cardboard shapes, outline the designs, and add little details without switching between brushes and pens. Suddenly, the project felt much more approachable.
Less Setup Makes It Easier to Find Time to Create
You know that feeling when you’d love to make something, but the thought of getting all your supplies out makes you put it off?
With POSCA markers, there’s no need to set up paint tubes, a palette, brushes, and a cup of water. Shake the marker with the cap securely on, prime the tip on scrap paper when needed, and you’re ready to begin.
It’s easier to make room for a creative break when setting up doesn’t feel like a project of its own. You can work on a few details, put the caps back on, and return to your creation another evening.
And when you only have 15 minutes to yourself, that can be enough to make you reach for your supplies.
You Can Let Each Layer Dry and Add More Details
When you’re making a gift, you want it to look lovely. Sometimes that makes you hesitate before adding a color. What if you change your mind?
POSCA paint markers let you layer colors once the first coat has dried. Depending on the colors and surface, you may need more than one coat, but being able to cover or adjust a small detail makes experimenting feel less intimidating.
I still recommend testing first. But you can try a white highlight, a few dots, or another color and let the design develop as you go.
It’s much more enjoyable to think, “What could I add here?” than to feel afraid of making a mistake.
Everyday Objects Start Looking Like Creative Possibilities
This may be what won me over most: realizing how many things I could decorate beyond a sheet of paper.
I’ve enjoyed decorating small rocks collected on walks, brightening up notebook covers, and personalizing a terracotta pot for my plants. With the mobile, a few pieces of cardboard became a gift to hang up.
You start with one object, then catch yourself looking at another and thinking, “I could do something with that…”
A wooden box, a fabric bag, a hanging decoration—there are plenty of places to start. Preparation and finishing vary by surface, so check the official POSCA surface guides before you begin, especially if your finished piece will be washed or handled often.
My tip for paper projects: choose thick paper or cardstock and test first. The moisture in the paint can cause thin paper to buckle, particularly if you apply several layers.
How to Use POSCA Paint Markers for Your First Project
You don’t need an elaborate project to get started. A small cardboard decoration or a simple design on a box gives you a chance to get comfortable with the markers.
- Prepare your surface. Follow the instructions for your chosen material and protect your work area.
- Shake the marker with the cap on. This helps mix the paint inside.
- Prime the tip on scrap paper. Press gently as directed until the paint reaches the tip, then test the flow before working on your project.
- Build your design gradually. Let each layer dry before adding another color over it.
- Finish according to the surface instructions. Some projects need additional steps to protect the design.
Start with something small enough that you’ll enjoy finishing it. You can always move on to a bigger project once you know how the markers feel.
Which POSCA Paint Marker Set Should You Choose?
It’s easy to get distracted by the number of colors in a set. But the first question I’d ask is: what would you like to make?
For the small designs and details featured here, I’d suggest looking at POSCA PC-3M markers, which have a fine bullet tip measuring approximately 0.9–1.3 mm.
The two options below use the same marker model. Your choice comes down to whether you want a small selection to try or more colors to work with.

Option 1: Want to Try POSCA Markers? Start with an 8-Color PC-3M Set
Would you like to decorate a few rocks, personalize a box, or make a small hanging ornament? An 8-color POSCA PC-3M set in basic colors is a practical place to start.
Look for the assortment that includes:
- Eight basic colors: white, black, red, yellow, pink, light blue, blue, and dark green.
- A fine 0.9–1.3 mm bullet tip, suited to outlines, small designs, and decorative details.
- The same tip size on all eight markers, so you keep a consistent line width as you switch colors.
White and black are useful for highlights, outlines, and finishing touches. The remaining colors give you a starting palette to experiment with.
You don’t need every shade to make something you love. A few colors that work well together can give a simple object plenty of personality.

I’d choose this set if you want to try POSCA markers with one project in mind. You can add individual colors later as you discover what you enjoy making.
Option 2: Want More Color Choices? Choose a 16-Color PC-3M Set
Already imagining several things you’d like to decorate? A 16-color POSCA PC-3M set gives you more room to play with color combinations.
Look for a classic-color assortment featuring:
- Sixteen colors, giving you more choices for different projects.
- Fine 0.9–1.3 mm bullet tips, suited to outlines, small designs, and details.
- PC-3M markers throughout the set, so you expand your palette while keeping the same tip size.
The appeal is being able to try a different color combination without returning to the same few shades each time. For cardboard ornaments, notebook covers, or small decorated boxes, those extra choices can be part of the fun.
I’d suggest this set if you already know you’ll be reaching for your POSCA markers regularly. You’ll have a broader palette ready when the next idea comes along.

Remember that more colors don’t mean more tip sizes. If you later want to fill larger areas, you can add a wider-tip marker to your supplies.

What If You Made Your Next Gift Yourself?
When I first chose the Lost Ocean designs, they were still pictures in a book. By cutting, coloring, and assembling them, I turned them into a mobile for my friend’s daughter.
That’s the part I remember most: turning an idea into a personal gift. Something I had chosen the shapes and colors for myself.
Every line doesn’t have to be perfect for a handmade gift to be lovely. The care you put into it, the colors you choose, and the little details all become part of its charm.
A forgotten box, a piece of cardboard, a rock brought home from a walk… You might already have the starting point for your next project.
